NSF Innovation Corps (NSF I-Corps)

NSF I-Corps trains researchers and early-stage teams to evaluate the commercial potential of technology coming out of academic or federally funded research, using a structured customer-discovery curriculum (100+ customer interviews) rather than a traditional business plan.
Objectives
Reduce the time between promising lab research and a viable startup or licensed product by forcing teams to validate market need directly with potential customers before committing to a product direction. I-Corps also feeds later-stage federal programs like SBIR/STTR.
Who can apply?
- National Teams: typically a PI, an entrepreneurial lead, and an experienced mentor.
- Underlying research or technology usually has some federal-funding or university-research connection, though sites/programs vary in how strictly this is enforced.
- Regional I-Corps Sites and Hubs (university-hosted, lower-dollar, often faster to access) are a common entry point before applying to the national program.
What do you get?
- National Teams: up to $50,000 and a ~7-week cohort-based training curriculum.
- I-Corps Sites: local, lower-dollar training (up to $100,000/year per site, distributed to individual teams in smaller amounts) with less red tape.
- I-Corps Hubs: regional hub programming and access to a larger cohort/network.
- Nearly 1,400 teams that completed I-Corps have gone on to raise a combined $3.16B in subsequent funding, per NSF.
